Just discovered it’s FWD. That was a quick buzzkill.

Indeed.
The first crossover. Matra pioneered a lot of car types, see the Espace, which basically created the minivan in Europe.

Nice little vehicle.
Simca sold cars in US America a looong time ago - through Chrysler/Plymouth dealerships.
I like the sculpting around the headlights on both vehicles.

I had a model of a red Matra Rancho when I was a kid and I always wanted one (I had a Bburago 1955 Lancia Aurelia b24 Spider America that I felt/feel the same way about).
I thought the Rancho looked similar to the Disco Series I but next to each other they look very much different. Then I’d see a Rancho and think ‘that looks like a Disco Series I again.

Yeah, but it’s FWD.

28 years prior, a couple hundred miles southeast:

Yes, it was a tarted up Simca van.

I love Matra, one day I’ll get to drive a Bagheera

Well, it is based on a tiny van

We also got Simca products through Chrysler here in Brazil. The Simca Chambord with the 2.3 V8 comes to mind.

The basic designs are pretty much the same, boxy with elevated roof at the back, the bonnet has elevations to match the headlights and the all-around offroadyness to them.

Because it is based on a tiny SIMCA van

True.
I found this looking at pre-production Range Rovers the other day. The Spencer Abbott conversion on vehicle YVB168H.

Teeny tiny V8! We just got the one car, if I recall correctly. Saw it when dad considered a Plymouth Fury II. Of course, he ordered yet another Chevy Impala.

I quite like Erich Honecker’s Range Rover

Probably not a sales success in the US then I imagine. In Brazil the dictatorship limited the number of imports so the Simca was quite popular as a luxury car. My grand-father told stories about almost buying one, he ended up with the FNM JK.

That looks very similar to another I saw a while back in brown.
